New regulations for car modification in China have been implemented

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has released the "Guidelines for Technical Specifications for Automotive Refitting", aiming to "streamline regulations" and extract bottom line clauses that can be legally modified. The guidelines explicitly include 16 modification behaviors within the legal scope, covering areas such as power system tuning (such as ECU optimization), exterior component replacement, chassis suspension adjustment, wheel hub style modification, and intelligent module installation. At the same time, the guidelines strictly prohibit any modifications that may affect structural safety, alter vehicle dimensions, or obstruct monitoring equipment. For example: ◾ If ECU calibration involves power increase, it must meet the National VI emission standards and have OBD data upload compliance filing; ◾ The appearance of the bumper, wheel hub, film, headlights, etc. can be adjusted, but the overall size, labeling, and legal necessary information of the original car body must not be changed; ◾ Chassis tuning such as suspension and suspension must be verified by qualified testing institutions for safety; ◾ Intelligent modifications (such as cameras, radars, ADAS modules) must comply with corresponding signal standards and electromagnetic compatibility requirements. At the same time, the policy also emphasizes that local governments can adapt to local conditions, support the integration and development of car modification culture and industry, and promote cross-border consumption scenarios such as car racing, camping tourism, cultural museums, etc. This guideline is not a "big release" opening, but rather a means of carrying out market opening through "filing+bottom line rules" while preventing security chaos.
